Manufacturing Through History

Understanding the Machine

Materials Fundamentals
Pro lockedFilament is the ink of a 3D printer, but not all plastics are the same. In this module you will discover what filament actually is, how heat turns a solid string into a liquid line and back again, and why three popular plastics — PLA, PETG, and ABS — behave so differently on the print bed.
Use the interactive Material Lab to test PLA, PETG, and ABS under different temperatures and conditions, then correctly match each plastic to the job it is best suited for and explain why in one sentence each.
Reading a Print
Pro lockedBecome a print detective. Every failed or ugly print leaves clues on its surface and in its shape. In this module you will learn to look closely, name what you see, and trace each defect back to the part or setting that caused it — so you can fix prints instead of guessing.
Use the Failure Lab to diagnose at least six different broken prints. For each one, name the defect, explain in one sentence what caused it, and state one change you would make to fix it.
The Slicer
Pro lockedDiscover the secret software that turns a 3D model into a language your printer can read. You will learn what slicing and G-code really are, why layer height changes how good and how fast a print is, and why supports and infill exist at all. By the end you will be able to set up a print like a pro and predict how your choices change the result.
Use the interactive Slicer to slice the same model three different ways — a fast draft, a fine detailed version, and a strong rugged version — and explain in writing how layer height, infill, and supports changed each one.
