Module 1 / ~3h

Design Thinking

Free

Before you ever open a CAD program, you need to know what to make and why. This module teaches you to hunt for real problems worth solving, define them in terms of human needs and hard constraints, and adopt the prototype mindset that lets you iterate fast and fail cheap. Design thinking is the difference between printing clever junk and shipping things people actually use.

Problem Brief and First Prototype Plan

Find a real, observed problem in your own life or community, write a one-page problem brief that states the need, the constraints, and the value, then sketch a plan for the cheapest possible prototype you could build this week to test your core assumption.

Tinkercad Foundations

Build real 3D models directly in your browser using Tinkercad. You will start with primitive shapes on a workplane, learn to align and move them with precision, combine them with grouping and boolean subtraction, add raised and recessed text, and export a finished, printable keychain. By the end you can turn an idea into an STL file with no software to install.

Capstone
Design and Export a Custom Keychain

Use everything from this module to design a personalised keychain in Tinkercad: a solid body with a hole for the ring, your name or initials as text, and clean, aligned geometry. Export it as a watertight STL ready for slicing.

Design for Printability

A model that looks perfect on screen can still fail on the bed. In this module you will learn the design rules that decide whether a part prints cleanly: how steep an overhang can be before it sags, how far the nozzle can bridge across thin air, how thin a wall can get before it disappears, and how the single choice of orientation changes strength, surface quality, and how much support material you waste.

Make It Printable

Take one model that fails to print well and redesign it for printability. Diagnose its overhangs, bridges, and thin walls, then choose and justify a print orientation that minimises support while preserving strength where the part needs it.

Module 4 / ~3h

Tolerances and Fit

Real printers are not perfect, yet parts still need to snap, slide, and bolt together. In this module you will learn the language of clearance, interference, and press fits, then build a personal fit-calibration workflow so your assemblies work on the first print instead of the fifth.

Capstone
Design Your Personal Fit Card

Model and print a single calibration card containing a graduated set of holes, pins, and slots at known clearances. Measure the results, identify which clearance gives a free-slip fit, a snug fit, and a press fit on your machine, and record those numbers as reusable design rules.

Functional Parts

Stop printing trinkets and start solving problems. In this module you take a written brief, turn it into a real functional part like a phone stand or a cable organizer, then iterate it through versions until it actually works. You will learn to design for a job, test against reality, and improve deliberately the way working product designers do.

Capstone
Brief to Working Part

Choose one functional brief (a phone stand for video calls, or a desk cable organizer for two to four cables). Design version one in Tinkercad, print it, test it against the brief's requirements, then design and print at least one improved version that fixes a real measured problem.
